BAMS Fall Fun Fly and News Release
September 25, 2021
The Boerne Area Model Society (BAMS) is very happy to announce that the Kendall
County Animal Shelter at Joshua Springs Park and Preserve has been selected as the
beneficiary of our 2021 Fall Fun Fly. A $1,750 donation will be presented to them on
Saturday, September 25, 2021.
Typically, BAMS raises about a thousand dollars for the selected charity but always
hopes for more! These public events evolve from BAMS community outreach and
involvement program as stated in our bylaws. For more information, visit our website:
https://www.boernerc.org. This year, the event was held on Saturday, September 18,
2021, from 8 am. until 5 pm. In addition to flying, there were model aircraft related
raffles, a silent auction, and a great lunch.
Each year BAMS sponsors a model flying event at Kendall County’s Joshua Springs Park
and Preserve, just north of Boerne on IH-10. BAMS invites pilots from the surrounding
area clubs to come fly with us and enjoy the weekend; residents of the area also invited
to enjoy the park, visit with pilots and see the models up close.
The purpose of this social event is for all to have fun with their planes and to meet and
fly with other pilots and for BAMS to raise money for a donation to one of the local
charities. This year we also remembered one of our founding members, George
Sheffield. Typically, we have 50 attending pilots and 100 to 150 public spectators. We
often have representatives from our national organization: the Academy of Model
Aeronautics in attendance.
In the past BAMS has donated to local children’s homes, Boerne and Kendall County
Animal shelters, KLRN, the Boerne Library, Hill Country Daily Bread Ministries, and
several other Kendall County area charities. All together, BAMS has donated almost
$ 8 ,300 to local charities.
BAMS has additionally arranged to support the Kendall County Youth Ag and Equestrian
Center Family Fest on Saturday, October 2, 2021. BAMS will provide the pilots, fuel, and
model airplanes for Radio Control and Control Line training flights for the winner of
their UAV propeller auction.
On the next day, October 3, pilots will participate in a national control line flying event,
the Ringmaster Fly-A-Thon. This event is based on a 1950’s era model airplane and
celebrates “old style” control line flying of an antique airplane. In 2019, a record 550
pilots from around the world flew a Ringmaster during that event. We hope to better
that record this year.
During 2020-1, BAMS took the initiative to beautify and upgrade its flying field and
support facilities. In particular, we refurbished a taxiway to make it safer and easier to
use, added fill to the roadway for easier entrance to the parking area, and added a
sunshade to the Control Line flight area – thereby making flying control line flying more
enjoyable and accessible.
Overall, COVID-19 has cost BAMS about 20 members since 2019. It has also forced us
to cancel two public fund raising events that had been planned over the last 18 months.
So we’re excited about the success of our 2021 Fall Fun Fly and the upcoming KCYAEC
events and look forward to better years ahead.
Bob Weiss,
2021 BAMS President
